This wonderful Vernon Kilns American Pottery Dumbo beautifully captures the character and personality that Walt Disney created!
Walt Disney’s Dumbo, had its premiere on October 23, 1941. One year earlier, a contract had already been signed between Vernon Kilns and the Walt Disney Studios to produce ceramic figurines, decorative bowls and vases of some of the characters from Fantasia, Dumbo and The Reluctant Dragon.
Vernon Kilns produced 36 individual ceramics from Fantasia. Due to the high quality in the development of these beautiful pieces, combined with the ceramic’s high production cost and the start of World War II, Vernon Kilns discontinued the manufacturing of these pieces after only 18 months.
On July 22, 1942 Vernon Kilns (for financial reasons) assigned their current Disney contract to a one time Vernon Kilns employee Evan K. Shaw of Los Angeles under the name of the American Pottery Co. After Vernon’s existing stock had been depleted, American Pottery continued to produce some of the Dumbo designs including two Dumbo the Elephant poses Molds #40 & 41, the Hop Low Salt and Pepper Shakers with Molds #35 & 36, along with a Dumbo, Timothy Mouse pose with Mold #38.
You are bidding on a wonderful Vernon Kilns/American Pottery Dumbo with Yellow Baby Bonnet using the Vernon Kilns Mold numbered #41.
This cute Vernon Kilns / American Pottery Dumbo is now about 78 YEARS OLD!
This Dumbo creation using Mold #41 measures 5” tall. It has no chips, cracks or breaks and very little crazing. It does have the Vernon Kilns Mold #41 incised in the base. Dumbo is in near mint condition for its age! This adorable Dumbo would make a wonderful addition for any Vernon Kilns American Pottery or Dumbo collector.
