Walt Disney’s grand experiment in animated film, Fantasia, had its world premiere in New York on November 13, 1940. One month earlier, a contract was signed between Vernon Kilns and the Walt Disney Studios to produce ceramic figurines, decorative bowls and vases of some of the characters from Fantasia, Dumbo and The Reluctant Dragon. Vernon Kilns produced 36 individual ceramics from Fantasia. Due to the high quality in the development of these beautiful pieces, combined with the ceramic’s high production cost and the start of World War II, Vernon Kilns discontinued the manufacturing of these pieces after only 18 months.
On July 22, 1942 Vernon Kilns (for financial reasons) assigned their current Disney contract to a one time Vernon Kilns employee Evan K. Shaw of Los Angeles under the name of American Pottery Co. After Vernon’s existing stock had been depleted, American Pottery continued to produce some of the Dumbo designs including two Dumbo the Elephant poses Molds #40 & 41 and a Timothy Mouse pose with Mold #38.
